Title "Chemical and insecticidal characterization of African basil (Ocimum gratissimum), Indian Basil (Ocimum sanctum) and Lantana camara" One of the most significant contributors to the global food crisis is loss of stored grains, mainly caused by insect pests. Synthetic insecticides and fumigants are considered as key measures to control these insect pests. However, the major issues with synthetic insecticides and fumigants are related to residual contamination and the development of resistance by insect pests. Therefore, there is a global tendency to reduce their use by finding alternative eco-friendly approaches. Among botanical extracts used as insecticides, essential oils are promising alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Essential oils are secondary metabolites synthesized by plants and they play important roles in plant defence and signalling processes. The present study will explore the effectiveness of essential oils extracted from three species: Ocimum gratissimum L., Ocimum sanctum L. and Lantana camara L. as bioinsecticides. The essential oil of Azadirachta indica L. will be used as positive control. Essential oil characterization of aforementioned plants will be done with Clevenger apparatus and GC-MS along with a comparative analysis of specific compounds having repellancy/toxicity effects against the confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum (du Val) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). |
