Title "Evaluation of mass trapping trials of the European shot-hole borer Anisandrus dispar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in intensive apple orchards" The European shot-hole borer Anisandrus dispar is a polyphagous insect of several forest and fruit trees. In South Tyrol the damage caused by this species has recently led to severe yield losses of apple production, with a lowered fruits production and a rapid dieback of 2-3 years old trees immediately after bloom. Stressed trees, which may have been already weakened by frost, waterlogging, drought or root-damage, are at highest risk of attack by A. dispar. Stressed apple trees are known to release a higher amount of ethanol than healthy trees and ethanol-baited traps are used to monitor the population dynamic of this beetle. The aim of this research project, carried on in collaboration with the Laimburg Research Centre (Italy), is to evaluate the efficacy of a new mass trapping technique where ethanol impregnated catch-wood will be used to attract & kill a high number of A. dispar in field condition. The project will start with the preparation and random distribution of the ethanol impregnated catch-wood in two apple orchards known to be strongly infested. To monitor the population density during the mass trapping trials we will install Rebell rosso® traps lured with ethanol. The efficacy of the mass trapping will be evaluated by counting weekly the number of fresh holes of infested trees present in the two orchards as well as the fresh holes on lured woods. The experiment will start from the end of February till May 2018 or till no flight activity of A. dispar will be observed. |
