Title "Study of chemical ecology of Halyomorpha halys and Drosophila suzukii towards improved monitoring and management techniques" The increased international transportation of goods triggered the dissemination of invasive insect species. In the last few decades, exotic insect species spread and established in many new countries all around the world. In particular, the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and the spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) spread all over the continents challenging agricultural production, especially of regions with highly intensive crop production such as South Tyrol. Both species are phytophagous insects, guided with their olfactory sensory system toward the selection of suitable host plants. To improve management techniques of these invasive species, additional research is demanded on their behavior as well as natural regulation with help of natural enemies. Therefore, this PhD research aims to investigate olfactory responses of H. halys induced by host plants, as well as field survey with the release of natural parasitoid Trissolcus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Besides that, a complex interaction of D. suzukii with the yeasts will be further investigated in order to improve and extend the present knowledge on its olfactory behavior. The collected data will influence the fundamental and applied approach in pest control and will likely open new perspective in scientific research. This work is done in collaboration with Laimburg Research Center. |
