Title "Identification of the optimal rearing protocol for the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) on OFMSW under controlled conditions" Insects as feed source are a valuable alternative to nowadays protein-rich meals composed by soy and fish. FAO has estimated an increase of 75% of the request of proteins, within 2050. So far, 70% of agricultural lands are used for livestock pasture, and another 10% is used to feed livestock. Freshwater consumption in agriculture is a crucial point, and fish is an exhaustible resource of proteins. Insect rearing has several advantages, as: high conversion efficiency (7 times higher than beef), low request of water and space, and low greenhouse-gas/ammonia emission. Recently, the Black Soldier Fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), is studied for its ability to develop on a wide variety of organic (animal and/or vegetable) waste. The possibility to manage organic waste with decomposers leads to create a circular economy system with a high recovery of organic matter. In fact, BSF as organic waste bio-converter creates a rich in protein and fat biomass. My Postdoc aim is to evaluate the possibility to manage the Organic Fraction of Solid Municipal Waste (OFSMW) produced in South Tyrol, with insects, to obtain a soil improver from the digested waste and feed for chickens from BSF larvae. I will define the rearing parameters for BSF development on OFSMW and I will optimize the environmental conditions to obtain the maximum waste reduction. To apply the information about growth perfomance to a rearing facility, a bio-factory will be implemented to guarantee a continuous production of larvae during the year. The process will focus on three blocks: an aviary for adult fly mating and eggs’ collection, a “nursery” for eggs’ hatching and I-II instar larvae collection, and a larvarium in which larvae grow and digest OFSMW. Each block will have the best temperature and humidity parameters for that developmental stage. Part of the collected larvae will be used to subsequent experiments carried out by other project’s partners. The project will be done in collaboration with EcoCenter S.p.A and other national institutions. |
