South Tyrol –Italy’s northernmost province

Italy’s northernmost province combines Alpine staidness with Italian joie-de-vivre, the Dolomites – a UNESCO World Heritage site – and cultural diversity. South Tyrol is a region abounding with contrasts, between Mediterranean landscape and Alpine peaks, deeply rooted tradition and cosmopolitan curiosity. The allure of South Tyrol lies in its variety and the harmony of opposites. South Tyrol’s three languages and cultures come together in the most harmonious way in the region’s capital town.

Bolzano/Bozen  - South Tyrol’s provincial capital

South Tyrol’s provincial capital, Bolzano/Bozen, is situated at the confluence of the rivers Isarco/Eisack and Adige/Etsch, in a valley basin at an elevation of 870 ft/265 m above sea level with the Dolomites in the background.

The city of Bolzano/Bozen is located within a monumental valley, and its medieval centre, not far from the bustling "piazza," features many colourful shops and traditional eateries. The clear blue sky shines year-round over the country roads and surrounding mountains and lakes.

The bilingual province capital is singularly European. Here, north meets south. Bolzano/Bozen lies at the confluence of two of Europe’s great languages and cultures – German and Italian, the language of Goethe and Dante. Since time immemorial it has been a transit town for travellers between the Germanic north and Italy. Bolzano’s/Bozen’s geographical location has made it an important trading town and a centre for tourism. The town abounds with restaurants offering the very best from the Italian and Austrian culinary traditions. Bolzano/Bozen is also popular far and wide for its numerous boutiques, delicatessens and markets. A saunter through the town reveals its rich culture, its museums, castles, historical stately buildings. In short, a town and its environs steeped in history.
As a multilingual city and a cultural centre Bolzano/Bozen still has a lot to offer today. Its plethora of theatres, concerts with special programmes, cinemas and museums, combined with a series of trendy night spots that create local colour make Bolzano/Bozen a city that is beginning to cater for its increasingly demanding student population.
