Kurt W. Forster

Kurt W. Forster (*1935, Prof.) is Professor at the Yale School of Architecture where he directs the doctoral studies program. He has taught at Stanford, M.I.T., Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. He directed the Swiss Institute in Rome and served as counsel to the city government of Berlin (1991-96). For a decade, beginning in 1984, he was director of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles where he established a comprehensive research library, archives, a program of resident scholars and a publication and exhibition series. He was appointed director of the 9th International Architecture Biennale in Venice (2004).
Forster is a member of the Accademia di San Luca, Rome, of the Consiglio scientifico at the Palladio Center in Vicenza, and a recipient of the Meret Oppenheim Prize, 2009.

  • Numerous publications in the field of History of Art and Architecture, amongst others about Jacopo Pontormo, Palladio, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Giuseppe Terragni, Aby Warburg, Carlo Scarpa, and about contemporary architecture.
