The Faculty of Design and Art centres the basic meaning of design research (beyond its selective project-orientated application) in the meanwhile internationally recognised role of design for an economically successful, meaningful content and ethically justifiable development of today's established systems of social existence (cf. among others John THACKARA. In the Bubble. Designing in a complex World. MIT Press, London/Cambridge MA 2005).
Design and design research number among those assets of a conceptual nature that are mentioned for instance by Alan GREENSPAN in his article “A market for ideas” (The Economist, 20.10.2005). “Ideas and innovations”, he maintains there, “have become the most important resource, replacing land, energy and raw materials. As much as three-quarters of the value of publicly traded companies in America comes from intangible assets, up from around 40% in the early 1980s. The economic product of the United States has become predominantly conceptual.”
This assessment was confirmed at a European level by the objectives already formulated in March 2000 at a special session of the European Council in Lisbon. Europe was defined there economically and culturally as a trading area whose dynamics and competitiveness rest decisively on innovations and knowledge-based services.
In view of similar framework conditions for the design professions, the objectives of design research at the Faculty of Design and Art
of Bozen-Bolzano are:
guaranteeing that our teaching is constantly up-to-date, innovative and has a future-orientated character
the creation and maintenance of an international network for exchange and cooperation of research activities in general as well as jointly defined topics in particular
the identification of fundamental design research problems as well as processing trendsetting suggestions and procedures for their solution. |
